Read the other thread on Richard Boyer's upcoming trip to Memphis for info on this southern city. There are seven or more hotels in downtown Memphis. It depends on how much you want to spend per night. The Peabody is five stars. And there's the Hampton Inn on Beale Street, which puts you within walking distance of downtown clubs, restaurants and other sites along Beale. This is probably where you want to be if you're going to visit Stax and the National Civil Rights Museum. You can find less expensive deals in other parts of Memphis like Graceland, which has sevaral motels & hotels. But you'll need a car or some type of shuttle service the farther out you stay. Memphis is not ideal for walking. Its really spread out. (Message edited by motown_fan on August 02, 2010) |

It's been about ten years since I went to Savannah and Charleston so it would be wrong to mention specific places. Savannah is a very small, quite town. Although, when I went, there was an old Main Street with a few restaurants, bars, antique shops, the main restaurant and bar area was on a walkway at the side of the river. I remember most hotels in that rough area too. We stayed in a basic motel at one end of the river walk which was fine for a night or two. The historic squares and tree lined streets are all nearby and everything's in walking access. Charleston is a bigger town but still not anyway near 'city' size. You can walk around easily. There are lots of restaurants, shops etc in the centre. The whole town and surrounds including the 'Battery'(? where there is a small square and old houses) is very pleasant, historic and walkable. We stayed in a hotel just outside the centre and got a cab or courtesy bus in and out. Sounds like you're planning a really great trip! |
