I got a chance to see Earl Young's playing one time live at the Blue Note Club which was located at 103th & Halstead which has since been torn down. On that show was Billy Paul, The Three Degress, The O'Jays, and Herold Melvin & The Bluenotes. Parton me, its been some years I forgot exactly who was on the show. I know it was in 1973 or 74. The second time I seen him with Teddy Pendergrass' For Ladies Only concert on T.V.

That was great, thanks Weldon! Earl has a unique and special way of playing, he keeps it basic and simple, but his pocket and time are really deep, and that's what it takes to be a hitmaker! I love how he still calls the hi-hat a sock cymbal :-) That's what I remember it being called when I was a kid. It's great to see him still looking well and sounding great!

Earl is the king of the hi-hhat! It was a pleasure speaking with this legend. You can tell he has taken good care of himself.

Kdubya: I'm talking 73-74? It's been a long time. That's just like asking me who opened at the Funk Fest, like who was the first act, second act, and etc. If you we're at the Blue Note maybe can remember who was there (LAUGH!).

First of all back to the thread: Yes I concur very strongly that Earl Young was a superb drummer.

and now for something thats a bit off topic :

@DLM
I am laughing my friend, you posted the information not me, I just really found it funny that you described who was on the show, then stated you couldn't remember who was on the show......ROTFLMAO ! and now you've done it again......

By the way that was a very strong line up for a club that was very small, nobody could have made money on that one. Additionally that would have been some kind of "historic" event that would undoubtedly found its way into the newspapers and radio. The way that I know Chicago, we'd still be talking about this now.........

Yes I have been to the Blue Note, but I never saw a line up like that, hate I missed it. But In 73-74 I was all over the place because I was in the Armed Forces.......but we sure tried to keep up with what was going on back home......the BN night club was about 15 blocks from my house in Morgan Park. My folks used to frequent the joint before I was old enough to enter........and they really did'nt have a lot of Motown/Philly artists, they were more of a Jazz/Blues venue.

Look Kdub,

I wasn't old enough to be in the Blue Note Club. So happens that my family attented. Of course they left my cousins and me with a older cousin to babysit. It be so hot we all couldn't set in the house. Since the club was only two blocks away, we get on our bikes and ride there and listen to the show, while my family we're inside. The place would be crowed that BN would open their doors. and we would see who? and listen to the music.

I recall it would be either clean-up week and the summers, all my cousins would spend the week or the summer with my aunt.

The only thing we applied was to listen to the man who was handling the door, and his instructions to us was not to block the door. And we didn't. Man, we'd talk to the guy and we'd be bobbin' our heads to the music. Since the guy was really cool with us he'd tell us who taking the stage, and give us sodapop. The doorman,[bless him], would ask if we'd all ate and he's sneak us out some sandwiches.

The last time I seen the doorman was back in 76 when my folks moved to the Southside, and we talked and joked with each other.

Now the artist that did appear at the BN club we're- The Spinners, O'Jays, Lou Rawls, Billy Paul, Bohanian with Carolyn Crawford,, Three Degress, Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes and Sharon Paige, and two other acts I can't think of at the moment. Remind you that this one show with all

I like to make a correction Kdub, it was 72-74, not 73-74. Plus I would stay with my aunt on weekends too because my aunt, her boyfriend and friends all in tow we're going to the Blue Note.

No, the PIR's we're not on the same bill not at one time. Sometimes there'd two acts on the bill at times.

No need to put me on the spot Kdub (LAUGH).

Earl Young. I recall he played on Teddy's For Ladies Only concert. He played a while 8 piece drumset. He taught me how a show drummer play can play live, and uses the highs and lows, and a dramatic style. Recording a record is one thing, but to see a drummer work it live, is totally different played live.

Not trying to man, it was a long time ago and I was pretty familiar with the local club scene.
Reminds me of the time I was in the High Chaparral Night Club on Stony Island and The group "War" was appearing, I was so caught up in their performance and dancing that I didn't realize they were making a Live Album over two nights.......Friday & Saturday, now the Chaparral was a humongous club and WVON DJ E Rodney Jones was the Master of Ceremony, and I couldn't tell you to save my life if I was there on Friday or Saturday, but when I repeat the story I usually say Friday, because that was the nite I liked going out because Saturday was always so crowded. I had no idea what was going on in the club, but I'll never forget being there......

I was home on leave and boy was I surprised when they released the album about a year later.....

Hi Kdub,

You and my dad was just a like. Young and wild having a fun night on the town (lol!). I can't fathom how you both got around to see so many shows. That's amazing to know. Anytime WAR would show they's always turned the place out! The frist time I seen them was at Grant Park. Kdubya, do you remember their first live double lp? It was recorded at Grant Park..."I was there."

DLM,

War recording a live album in Grant Park ? (I don't think so ! )

War's official website is www.wartheband.com
(go to Media and click on either album or discography)

The only the live recording they made, was at the High Chaparral. I'm aware of that, because E Rodney Jones was the MC. (no, I wasn't there, but the liner notes says so, and if I'm not mistaken,I believe you can here him announcing the band, before they took the stage.)

In the words of Ed Lover, "C'mon SON !" :-) LOL

(please check your facts before posting,or else ........) :-)

First of all to Weldon: I sincerely apologize for high jacking your thread with this nonsense. It just sort of got away from me. I won't do this again. I promise.......I don't like it when people do it on my threads and now I've done it myself.

I try to post as accurately and completely as I can, always have, always will, but something is wrong here and I don't like it one bit. There are many examples of wonderful stories and threads here at SDF and at least when
someone is embellishing or has tongue firmly
in cheek, that's fine with me.....but when you start pissing on my leg and then try to convince me that its raining, I find that information particularly hard to believe.

I will try resolve this matter as expeditiously as possible, because I certainly don't want to detract any more from the subject matter and someone you care about and had the decency to give us an inside peek into what makes them as great as they are.

I hope this issue is put to bed now, right now, because its not right.

Once again let me extend my humble apology. I've been around here long enough to know that if it walks like a duck..........

Weldon,
I also want to apologize, for adding my comments to your thread, that had nothing to do with the original subject you posted.

The subject of the group War,should have been created into a new thread. I got caught in the moment, and I should have know better. (my bad)

Its great that videos such as Earl's piece above are now being made ..... the guys who were there & knew what went on & how things were done will not be with us forever (Earl's 70 years old already)
....... so lets 'catch it while we can'.
