Did any one here ever saw James Brown in concert in 1972?Was this the first year that Brown had the whole review with acts like Lyn Collins, his longtime sideman Bobby Byrd and The J.B's?I'm wondering what the songs Talkin'Loud and Saying Nothing,King Heroin and I Got Ants In My Pants sound like live?I'm sure those songs were played in concert and maybe some concerts were recorded and possibly filmed.Hit me up with some great James Brown stories in his prime.Peace!

Yes, many times! Lyn was great! At first she
was presented as Lyn Collins & the Soul Twins,
two women who sang, Martha High and the other
was Binky (last name forgotten). Lyn was
real nice too!
Bobby did a stint, but pretty much directed
and conducted the band.
Ann Norman was the JB dancer.
He didn't perform King Heroin live too much.
When he did, he sat on a stool and Ann Norman
held the cue cards that he read from.
Beginning about '66 I saw the James Brown
Revue & Show twice a year through to the
mid-'70s.
Sometimes he played organ. And, of course,
he was the greatest when it came to dancing.
Lyn's first record was on Polydor label,
Just Won't Do Right, basically a duet with
James.
She never performed it live that I know of.
Then she was switched to the People label
and had a hit with "Think (About It)".
She then got her own microphone that James
gave her, it had rinestones on it.
She sometimes opened with a killer version
of Isaac Hayes' hit "Do Your Thing".
Bobby Byrd had a big R&B hit in Orlando with
"I Know You Got Soul". When he performed
it the crowd went crazy and he topped it off
by his exit from stage--he jumped into the
audience and then ran.
The crowd was in hysterics. So, jealous James
made sure he jumped into the audience during
his performance:-)

By the way, to answer your question, this was
not the first year he had the whole revue.
We saw the show in 66 with the Famous Flames
and the band, Bobby did a solo spot and so
did Vicki Anderson. Later, Bobby & Vicki
left for a while and Marva Whitney joined
the revue.
Ann Norman was usually the dancer, but one
time she wasn't there and there were four
girls dancing.
But the James Brown Revue began back in
the early '60s.
In the early '70s, like back in the early '60s,
he brought some support acts like the Stylistics,
Brenda & the Tabulations, David Ruffin.
In the early 60s groups like the Chiffons,
Crystals, etc. toured with the JB Revue,
and supposedly, so did the whole Motortown
Revue.

Daryl, I saw James Brown Show & Revue mostly in
Orlando,Florida. However, sometimes I went
with them to Tampa. Bobby Byrd & Vicki Anderson
were friends. Yes, of course, I remember
Fred Wesley, Maceo, St. Clair, Bootsy Collins,
etc. In fact, the first show Fred played was
in Orlando.
They weren't called the JBs until the early
70s, some time after Maceo Parker and several
others left. They left at the same time as
Marva Whitney, which she will talk about in
her new book "God, the Devil and James Brown".
For a while, they worked together--Marva
Whitney and Maceo Parker & All The King's Men,
as his group was called. I remember Continental
Artists were booking them and every where they
played in the beginning, James would do a radio
spot to say the band performing with Marva
Whitney and Maceo Parker is not the James Brown
Band.
But the band always played the opening--what
ever instrumental hits were big at the time,
such as "Soul Finger" (BarKays), "Hip Hug Her"
(Booker T. & MGs), "The Popcorn" which was a
hit by the James Brown Band, & "The Horse", etc.
Fred was great! I've been in touch with him
since he wrote his book, "Hit Me, Fred!".

There's quite a few video, live recordings
from that era too.

So you wanna know some stories on the james brown period around the early seventies?

I don't think you wanna , because nobody won't believe it ,because they think they know.
And to be save stick with it.

It's better to enjoy the music instead of the real thing behind it what happend sometimes!

Take this for instence , a lot of funkers think's bootsy was the man , but from where did he get it.
Take "give it up turn it loose" bootsy made this song?
But it was sweet charles sherrell who created the bassline for this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =PVjXaye2Vi8

About say it loud i'm black and i'm proud , it was sweet charles his first recording with james in 1968 , and he told me they just played it a very view times because of the political situation.

Enjoy the ride.

Bootsy & his band came in when alot of the band walked off or went "on strike". I think the first recording Bootsy was on was "Sex Machine". "Say It Loud" was played at every James Brown show I saw from the time it came out until late 70's & played on Soul & Pop stations here in the South, or at least Florida.I couldn't count the number of times I was at JB Shows in Orlando, Tampa & Jacksonville. I always liked Charles Sherrell, nice guy, and he did come back to JB at different times. I saw him with JB in early 80's in Tampa.
