Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Al Goodman, who sang baritone on such soul classics as "Love on a Two Way Street" and "Special Lady," died Monday, his family told CNN.

Goodman, 67, died of heart failure during surgery to remove a tumor at Hackensack Medical Center in New Jersey, according to his daughter, Rhonda Goodman.

Goodman was "joking and laughing" before his surgery, she said.

"There's mourning all over the world -- in England, in Germany and in Japan," said Marshall Thompson, leader of the Chi-Lites, on Tuesday. "We're all mourning for Al Goodman."

Goodman was a member of the Moments -- an R&B group that formed in Hackensack, New Jersey, in 1968 -- along with Harry Ray and William Brown. They topped the soul charts in 1970 with "Love on a Two Way Street" and again in 1975 with "Look at Me (I'm in Love)."

Last year, rapper Jay-Z sampled "Love on a Two Way Street" for his hit, "Empire State of Mind."

In 1978, the trio renamed itself Ray, Goodman and Brown. A year later, they hit No. 1 with "Special Lady." The group made regular appearances on the soul charts into the 1980s. Their last Top Ten single was in 1986.

Goodman is survived by his wife of 34 years, Henrietta, five children and one grandson.

A funeral is planned for Monday at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.

I saw the mention on CNN's news ticker today.

RIP Al Goodman.

Are all of the members of Ray, Goodman & Brown deceased?

MotownFan:

No. Billy Brown is still with us & sounding & dancing great!

I'm glad to see that CNN acknowledged Al. Under the circumstances, that warms my heart somewhat.

I told Al Goodman once that I was waiting and paid 20.00 to see the Stylistics who were great, but I came to hear Special Lady and I was waiting for the one line "Get down Billy Brown" and they didnt say it I was MAD! He laughed and said "Im sorry we will say it next time I dont know why we didnt?"...LOL Im one of those that gets livid if my favorite line in a song is not sung. Ahhh the memories.

Stephanie:

Nice story & I know what you mean.

I used to get on Al & the fellas whenever they didn't sing "Girls" & I've been working on them to do "Sweet Sweet Lady" & "What's Your Name" for awhile now.

Alas...there's only so much time in a show!

Nice story & it sounds exactly like what Al would've said & done :-)

Juicefree, Shoestrings that was the cut. I liked the way the voices just soared through the melody. It usually gets left off the RG&B compilations.

MotownFan:

It never even gets a mention.

This example reminds me of the point that you were making the other day about chart numbers not being the end-all & be-all when discussing quality music.

"Shoestrings" didn't chart very high, but that was no reflection on it's quality. Unfortunately, the single was released as Soul/R&B was in the midst of change & it kinda got lost in the radio shuffle back then.

Which is why while I reference chart positions, I never listened to music based on charts, airplay & when I was a DJ, I was the kind of guy who flipped over the 45 & played whatever I thought was good on an LP, regardless of what the companies were trying to push.

You really blew my mind with that one though. I never hear anyone talk about that song & if memory serves me correctly, I've never seen them perform it live.

I wish that Al could've seen this thread. He'd have loved reading what you wrote.

Juicefree, I still tend to listen to songs, the hits, that were played on the radio. But it's not just about the songs that made the charts. But I get bored listening to a lot of really obscure songs by little known artists and I've tried.

Back in the day, I tended to buy more albums than singles. I bought RG&B and RG&B II and Shoestrings was on that album. It was one of the tracks I kept going back to again and again.

I'm about to spend close to 20.00 for a Leroy Hutson CD that has Love oh Love on it. I heard it a few times on the radio, but i don't think it was a big, big hit, not a pop hit. But it's another one of my all-time favorites that rarely gets anthologized.

I'm also searching for a disc that has the moments and RG&B songs on it, just because.

Did you notice that that link has a picture of Harry Ray & not Al Goodman?

I've already contacted them about the mistake.

MotownFan:

I know that feeling. I've spent a bit more than I wanted to on way too many occasions in order to get 1 or 2 songs that I really wanted.

To be honest, it's hard to go wrong with Leroy Hutson. He's another unsung voice whom deserves far more attention than he receives.

Sometimes it truly feels as though there's just no justice in the music world.

Juice I noticed it immediately and it made me whince! I thought about writing them to correct the mistake but thought better of it. I thought that at least they are reporting the story. On one website they list Al's age at 63 , others put his age at 67.

Marv:

I was going to mention that as well, but I'm just glad that Al's being acknowledged, so I understand how you feel about that. I made a couple of posts there, including a bit of a verbal slap-down on some stupid person who couldn't resist having something dumb to say.

Al was 63, not 67, but under the circumstances, I felt that it's far more important that Al be acknowledged, than for me to quibble over his age.

A memory...

One time when I called Al to arrange an interview with one of "my kids", he told me about a show they were about to do in the Caribbean (I cannot remember where exactly but it may have been Jamaica). I told him about how many kids told me they knew about The Moments and RGB from cleaning on a Saturday when RJR (a Jamaican radio station) would only play oldies and Grandma told them to clean while she sang along. He laughed and asked if I remember some of the songs they mentioned and I did. For a few, he said, "Ya, we need to do that one" or "They knew that?".

A nice memory indeed.

Al was so debonair. He was too cool with the cuban cigars. A real gentleman.

Here's a download link to an Al Goodman tribute that was broadcast live on Saturday, 7/31. It includes live interviews with Reggie Haynes, Butch from Tavares, Gerald Alston, Billy Brown, Cliff Perkins, and more. It also includes a few Moments/RGB musical selections.

I'm just recuperating from about 30 hours with no sleep, so, I'm just getting caught up here.

I'm sorting through pictures, of which none were allowed during the service itself.

Reflecting back on yesterday, I have to see that a very sad occasion was tempered with humor & some very funny anecdotes by Al's son & friends. We all knew why we were there & there were some very touching moments & Gerald Alston & Lonnie Youngblood threatened to make the walls come tumbling down with some very passionate performances.

All in all, we walked away feeling happy through our sadness. A very uplifting service, indeed.
