Man oh man! This has been a rough year for entertainers. He may not be a household name, but he recorded one of the funkiest jams of 1973,that's been sampled by numerous of hip hop acts. He's featured in the latest issue of Wax Poetics magazine. May he rest in peace http://soul-sides.com/2010/07/ rip-melvin-bliss/ (Message edited by GeeTee(HPK) on July 28, 2010) |

Man, I'm really messed up by this. With the people that we're losing within the week : Phillip Walker (blues guitarist) 7/22 Carl Gordon (actor) 7/20 Al Goodman (Ray,Goodman & Brown)7/26 Now Melvin Bliss has joined the elders. |

Geetee: Thanks for posting. To think that one of the most sampled songs in Hip-Hop history, is this obscure song which was a B-Side. Before this song became sampler's gold, I'd never heard of it, much less heard of Melvin Bliss, which is rather ironic as the label was based here in New York. It just goes to show you the approach that was taken back then. Melvin needed something for the flip, did it & had no idea that he was creating something which was destined to become a classic. Finally, is it any wonder that this drum groove comes from the set of none other than "Pretty" Purdie? Thanks for posting this, as with Kdub, I certainly learned quite a bit about Melvin & this song & it's good to finally hear him give his perspective. This story humanized him & revealed him to be more than a man whom toiled in obscurity & so much more than a song that was sampled. Melvin Bliss - R.I.P. |

You're welcome Juice. Bernard Purdie is one of my favorite drummers, and it was great knowing that he's playing drums on "Synthetic Substitution."(the mystery is solved !) Melvin was 75 years old,and he managed to take pretty good care of himself. I glad the folks at Wax Poetics was fortunate enough to talk to him, before he made his untimely passing. He may be gone, but that one song will never be forgotten. |

I used to live in Jamaica, as well & don't live that far today. It would've been nice to know that he lived there. Back in the day, a lot of musicians lived in the Jamaica/St. Albans section of Queens. All of this time, all of these young rappers have been living in the midst of the creator of one of the most sampled songs & they probably never even knew it. Did anyone mention when Melvin passed? |

I don't think so. If I didn't run into a friend that broke the news to me yesterday morning,I wouldn't have known. |

Hi GeeTee, I had no idea it was Melvin Bliss. I forgot his name but I remember the record "Synthetic Substitution." Mister Purdie was the drummer of this track? Which I really didn't know. I'm aware of his studio work in Chgo, NY and LA-but had no idea - These men were ahead of their time. When the Hip-Hop started sampling a lot of the artist usually used the 808 drum machine, sometimes to overdubbed certain tracks or left it as is. With Purdie, one never need no use the 808. I loved his work with Steely Dan. I'm sorry to learn of Mr. Bliss' transition- May he RIP. |
