Hi all:

I wanted to give you a quick and official "heads up", and good news that TJL Ventures,LLC has entered into a multi-year deal to license and release many classic soul, R&B and doo wop performances over the next few years. The programs I'm producing will be making will be broadcast on public television and released on DVD by our new distributor Collectors Treasury Records.

Much of these (especially doo wop) performances are the rarest of the rare and features many classic R&B, vocal groups and soul musicians from the Dick Clark Productions archives. Many original groups whose members have long since passed on - - long before I was making shows for public television.

The upcoming special which features the first of some of these rare performances introduced by Ms. Franklin with her memories of the artists she loves, and many she also inspired.

We've also entered license agreements to bring many never before broadcast (in the US) footage from the vaults of the world. All to be featured in the TJL series, and "My Music" - - over the next few years (exact release dates and titles are still tba).

This show, touches on Motown performers- - but it's really meant meant to be much broader across many labels and singers throughout the 1960s and 1970's

I wanted you to share the good news with you - - as Soulful Detroit is like a second family to me, as all of you are here. It premieres locally on WTVS on July 31st at 9pm. Aretha Franklin presents: Soul Rewind will air nationwide throughout August and September on many public television stations (check local listings).

Much more details to follow in the weeks and months ahead. As you can imagine this has been a deal many many years in developing (and hard to keep to myself - I need to share the Dick Clark company has been amazing to work with in opening their vaults to us, exciting and enthusiastic, I thank their management and Mr. Clark for making this moment possible.

You've heard it here first, and ain't that "A Good Good Feeling".

Thank you "Miracles";

- tjl

Hi Tj,
Glad to hear from you.
I think that this is a great idea.
It is funny that this should come up.
Speaking of DICK CLARK & AMERICAN BANDSTAND.
There was a celebration last week that we attended at the old building where AMERICAN BANDSTAND was broadcast from at 45th and MARKET.
It was a tribute to the legends from PHILLY.
There is a thread about it on the forum.
We were all there, RUSSELL THOMPKINS OF THE STYLISTICS, THE INTRUDERS THE BLUENOTES,THE TYMES,BUNNY SIGLER, GILDA WOODS,and many more.
It was nice returning there. We appeared ther with DICK CLARK on AMERICAN BANDSTAND. DICK introduced our record SO MUCH IN LOVE. He put us on the map in which I will always be greatful.
So,I think that this is a great idea that you are doing. This might be concidered one of your best.I hope to see the broadcast of our apearance on there.See how young we looked then.(smiles)Keep up the good work, and thanks for keeping the music alive

T.J.

This is great news.

You have a lot of great performances that have yet to air & I just pray that a certain version of "Silent Night" which was taped in Dec. 2004 at Dover Downs makes one of these collections :-)

It's gonna take us a bit of time to get it all out there.

We're just trying to get enough built up for an eventual Christmas release.

Oh Yes, I don't know how I forgot. It is fully owned by the Jerry Lee Lewis estate - - we did license it from them in the upcoming "Aretha Franklin presents SOUL REWIND" special.

A great live performance - - sadly the 2" tapes were lost, (we think possibly in the Nashville flood - - just before we started the search to find the owners of the clip) - - but we got a pretty good source from the UK.

Thanks to all here that helped figure that out for us. It was a mystery to many.

The first Soul Rewind aired in the Memphis area last night. it was interesting. It pretty much presented clips of the expected soul greats like: Aretha, James Brown, The Miracles, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, Wilson Pickett, the Temptations and Ray Charles.

And there were some surprises like Jackie Wilson performing Higher & Higher and Martha & the Vandellas on American Bandstand. There was also Eddie Floyd on Bandstand and Doris Troy on Where the Action Is.

There was a video of Ray Charles and the Raeletts performing What'd I Say that was spoiled when a chorus of white singers joined them and drowned out everybody. Ray deserves better.

There was a Seventies segment featuring the Stylistics, Three Degrees, Spinners, Labelle and the Chilites.

I liked the program overall and would like to see more videos, but of some of the not so usual suspects.

You don't get programming like this anywhere these days but on PBS.

Anyone else see this program?

I caught it on Saturday night. My local station actually aired it two times in a row. At first, I didn't have high hopes because I thought I'd see a bunch of familiar clips. But I was pleasantly surprised.

I really enjoyed this program Saturday night. My fave parts being Martha, Roz & Betty from American Bandstand, Jackie Wilsons LIVE performance of "Higher & Higher" & LaBell's LIVE performance(they got DOWN).Aretha really does have a wonderful speaking voice & I have seen her LIVE several times before & she really doesn't speak much during those concerts.Jackie Wilson & Elvis had a lot of similarities in their performance mannerisms that I didn't realize before

I watched the show twice over the weekend and really enjoyed it. The Temptations, Miracles, Vandellas, Doris Troy and J.J. Jackson clips were the best. I did not like the added in audience applause at the end some of the clips.

Great work TJ keep on rocking.

Motown Fan, those were the Ray Charles Singers.

Thnaks all - - I really thought Aretha made a profound connection with her stories.

It was a side of her that was truly inspiring. There was very little scripting - - these were her memories and stories.

I did select the Ray Charles performance (with Ray being back by the "the Ray Charles singers") as an example of how music brings us all together. A subjective call, but one I felt was important for people all of the country to see. The coming together of two different talent experiences, bonded by the genius of Ray, Jazz and Blues.

We didn't add any fake applausee on the performances, that's how they all aired originally. This one had very little sound touch-up work as we chose to present the archival material exactly as it had been originally presented.

For me, The Miracles, Martha, Doris Troy and JJ Jackson were a real treat. Aretha's stories were so real - - Russell and The Stylistics are always the best, goosebump moments seeing them perform live back then. The Spinners were also cool. I felt it was like Ms. Franklin was sharing her family photos with us.

Our next show Soul Rewind will focus on the 70s era - - and is planned to air sometime in 2012.

The Ray Charles singers were an ensemble put together by the arranger Ray Charles (not the singer Ray Charles). They had a hit back in the 50's or 60's with a song called "Love Me With All Your Heart". I actually met THAT Ray Charles a few months back as he introduced my brother to a gathering of arrangers where he was giving a speech. The arranger Ray Charles is getting up in age, but is well respected in the L.A recording community...but his vocal ensemble is not real genre compatable to the singer Ray Charles style...although they did provide vocal backings to Perry Como and others.

You said it better than I did, Stubass. I thought the choral group detracted from Ray and the Raeletts. They didn't fit. But as I said, overall I enjoyed the special. T.J. always does quality, but that one performance bugged me.

They did look kind of silly trying do dance (or bop) in sync while doing the vocal backing. I didn't see the entire show, but I did enjoy Arethas stories and segues. Interesting factoid...Mitch Miller, who just passed on in the last day or so at age 98, was given Aretha to produce back in the early days...but the project flopped.

Tony:
In Elvis' early years, he had seen Jackie Wilson perform with Billy Ward & the Dominoes as well as solo. His recollections of Jackie were documented in a conversation he had with his Sun Records colleagues during the "Million Dollar Quartet" sessions in the mid 1950s.
