There have been several live performances in movies and on tv that have made the hair on the back of my neck stand up because of the impact of singer/performance.

Here are mine (no particular order:

1. "For Once in My Life" Paul Williams on the special TCB.
2. "I Believe" Fantasia on the night she declared American Idol
3. "With One More Look at You" Barbra Streisand in the movie "A Star is Born"
4. "It's My Turn" Diana Ross on Oprah around 2000
5. "Home" Diana Ross in "The Wiz"
6. "I Believe I Can Fly" Yolanda Adams around 2005 (David Foster was at the piano, Chicago Choir was backing her"
7. "The Prayer" Yolanda Adams/Donnie McClurkin (I think this was either a Soul Train or BET awards show with Mo'nique as the hostess)
8. "I'm Here" by Fantasia (song from The Color Purple" when she performed it on American Idol
9. "And I'm Telling You" Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)....not sure if she was actually singing live or if lip synced
10. "If I Can't Have You" and "One" by Adam Lambert on American Idol
11. "Weekend in New England" Jennifer Hudson on American Idol

I would be interested in your favorite performances.

Sorry, but I have to add to my list:

It's My Turn Diana Ross in the early 80s after she had just left Motown...this is from her special (Michael Jackson and Larry Hagman appeared on this show)

Here's a clip of that performance along with the Oprah segment which posted to YouTube a couple of years ago (the quality improves as the camera closes in on Diana's face)

Chris Brown's recent tribute to Michael Jackson on the BET Awards.

Manfred Manns performance of Blinded By the Light on the Midnight Special.
James Brown - TAMI show (probably the best performance I have ever witnessed by an entertainer in my life!)
Stephanie Mills singing HOME I saw her on Broadway and I have yet to cry that much again.
Susan Boyle singing I Dreamed a Dream
I know this is going to sound crazy but when Jerry Lewis sings Youll Never Walk Alone at the end of the MD telethons I get choked up.
Procol Harum live when they did Conquistador I was astounded.
Jennifer Holliday doing HOME. Hudson runs a clean second and she moved me but Miss Holliday brings it home for me and I cant keep the lump out of my throat.
Clay Aiken - Mack the Knife on American Idol. Not the most powerful performance I have seen but one of the most riveting.
The whole Diana Ross performance at Caesars Palace I Wanna be Bad and everything she was awesome.
Mary Wilson - I Am Changing gosh I get goosebumps when I hear her do it she is much better live than on TV.
Labelle on TV anywhere they never lipsynched in the day when everyone was doing it and to this day I think they have the most powerful voices of all the girl groups.

I wasnt as moved by Billie Jean on Motown 25 as everyone else was I dont know why. Maybe I just expected it of Michael.

Jobucats: I agree with your post in reference to Paul Williams. My entire family was gathered around the Tv for that one and I'll never forget it. One of the most heart wrenching performances I ever saw.

The performance of James Brown and Smokey Robinson and The Miracles in TAMI.

Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem at the All Star Game, nothing spectacular until almost by songs end the audience started clapping and you could tell how they were into it.

Michael Jackson Motown 25

Tempts Tops Motown 25

Wattstax

Curtis Mayfield/Superfly
Isaac Hayes/Shaft

even though you never saw them their presence dam near overshadowed the movies. Simply genuis.

Neyo & Mary J, singing "Do You" on some tv show....(Mary J's?).nice duet....

That Paul Williams on TCB...Lord Jesus...cant watch it now without crying!

Natalie Cole on her TV special of 1976-7 - when she Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds and broke it down to GOSPEL...I didn't know whether to shout , or to just boogie! Me and my Mother just sat there in awe!!! Natalie tears her BEHIND on this!

I JUST found it on You Tube after looking for this clip for the last 4 years...happy about this! :-)...MOM, RIP....:-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =9KD6tCdE9Qo

Once upon a time, there was a Marvin Gaye clip on You Tube where he danced the Hitch Hike at the Motortown review at The Apollo with one of the Marvelettes (my favorite female group at motown)...now I cant find it. But THAT - Marvin in that tight suit with his dancing fool self, can render the goose bumps out of my system for sure :-):-):-) PUT THAT CLIP BACK YOU TUBE!!!!! :-(

Prince on Jay Leno...this performance in particular -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =8vITKFi2W_o

Ive seen Prince do this live and darned near had a musical seizure...:-) ... Sheila is S-I-C-K!!!!!
I just watched it again while writing to you all and YUP still raises my hair...:-):-):-)

I am sure I could come up with many, but here are the three that immediately come to mind:

1) Dionne Warwick doing "Love Doesn't Live Here Anymore" on Johnny Carson.

2) Martha and the Vandellas doing (or more accurately lip-synching) to "Jimmy Mack" on American Bandstand. What I remember most was that the crowd just wouldn't stop cheering when they were finished and Dick finally said something to the effect of "Alright, you will get another crack at them," indicating that there would be a second performance in that show. Oddly I remember nothing about that second song.

3) Although she is not really my cup of tea, I was blown away by K. D. Lang's performance of "Crying" on a Roy Orbison tribute that was broadcast one night.

Luther when he sang A House Is Not A Home to Dionne Warwick when she won an award, also when he sang to Lena Horne, I'm Glad There Is You, I believe on the NAACP Image Awards. And like Marv said, the gospel allstars...I believe that was the end of one of the first Soul Train Awards....I have that on vhs.

Thanks for sharing all of your different ideas. There were several that I would have also mentioned (if I had remembered them in my initial post):
Aretha Franklin Nessun Dorma

Dennis Edwards "I'm Losing You"" TCB especially on that high "woooooooo" towards the end

Temptations/Four Tops "Battle" on Motown 25

Here are a few others that come to mind.

1. Salute to Smokey Robinson by Luther Vandross

2. "Somewhere Out There" Clay Aiken American Idol

3. All By Myself Latoya London American Idol

4. "All For You" Janet Jackson on her Icon special (looking good)

5. "I Wonder" Kelly Pickler CMA show (she breaks down because the lyrics are so autobiographical)

6. "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" Joan Oborne from the "Standing in the Shadows of Love" dvd

Jimmy Mack I watched a lot of Star Search in the day and I say NOBODY came close to upstaging that program the way Sam Harris did! Sugar Dont Bite got him a hit but he was so talented it was crazy that he didnt get big and stay that way. I know he is friends with Liza Minnelli I hope he gets work because Star Search would have been nothing without him. What shocked me was one day I turned it on and Jim Photoglo was on and he had a hit prior years ago with a song called Im Just a Fool In Love with You. I felt bad having to see him try to win something.

Ladyvanaye that Prince video floored me... What a performance from all the guys in the band too...

If you're talking about Marvin Gaye, you must see him singing the Lord's Prayer a capella in a Belgian church while he was living in Ostende...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =M_lD_zEqtfM

And if you mention Marvin's version of Star Sprangled Banner, then what will you say when you hear Johnny Gill's version (at an NBA game too!) the end is just mind blowing! (check out the faces of the Laker girls!!!)

@ Wonder B - Hey there my friend...glad you enjoyed it. Prince is, by definition, trade and literally a GENIUS. :-) That band in the video was the BEST he ever formed. :-) Seen them all live too at that One Night Alone concert...the first all night concert I ever went to...12 hours straight music , concert and after party all live music...I still haven't recouped from that...:-):-):-):-):-):-):-)

The Marvin Gaye clip I'm talking about comes from this show, but seems to have disappeared off of You Tube...:-( But this part with my favorite girls from Motown "The Marvelettes' is 'goosebumps' worthy as well... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =ObLHPaBClgI

The Temptations performing "The Way You Do The Things You Do" on Murray the K's TV special "It's What's Happening, Baby".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =6l_U8DQhYQA

Vanilla Fudge's killer performance of "You Keep Me Hanging On" from the Ed Sullivan Show.

Several Jackson 5 specials too numerous to mention.

And, of course, the tour-de-force...Paul Williams' "For Once In My Life" and Dennis leading "I Know I'm Losing You" on the TCB special...gotta watch both back-to-back....what an impact....

Whitesoxx,

I'm glad you mentioned Diana Ross singing "I Want to Know What Love is" (Motown at the Apollo. It's funny because just 2 nights ago I had shown that clip to a friend of mine. She looked so amazing and seductive in the performance (notice the eye contact with the camera from time to time). Too bad that she didn't include this on her "I Love You" cd.

I've already posted 2 lists, but want to "second the motion" to several that other forum members posted:
1. Nicholas Brothers in the "Stormy Weather" clip. Even my students who have viewed this are left speechless!

2."Lord's Prayer" Marvin Gaye (Thanks for bringing that to my attention Wonder B.)

3. "A Change is Gonna Come" Luther Vandross

Another one that I would want to add.

"You Will Know" Black Men United (show hosted by Queen Latifah and Lori Morgan). Tevin Campbell blew it away. There is one part where Tevin begins to sing and El Debarge looks at him with a "What the #$@&" look which had me rolling on the floor.

jobucats, I have always felt Diana should have recorded IWTKWLI as I love her rendition of the song and she did look amazing that night!

I have been to the Apollo theater (to see Chaka Khan) and when I was there I was wondering how on earth they could have fit so many artists plus the orchestra on such a tiny stage!

@Marv...it touches me every time I watch it. I think Willie knew Ray was about to leave us and just couldn't hold back his emotion.

Lots of great performances here. I'll just add Cyndi Lauper and Patti Labelle doing Time After Time on a Cyndi Lauper TV special.
