Hi All: No this isn't about the Marc Gordon with Levert. This is about the former 5th Dimension Manager Marc Gordon.

"MARC GORDON PASSES AWAY. The renown manager of The original 5th Dimension circa their heyday of the late '60's through the '70's, Marc Gordon has passed away. He had been ill for a number of years. Gordon, an executive at Motown in the early '60's, departed while discovering The Versatiles, who auditioned but were not signed to the label. He asked the unique and attractive quintet to find a hipper moniker--The 5th Dimension--and connected them with Johnny River's Soul City label and the rest was Grammy, Gold & Platinum history."

If I find out anymore information, I'll submit it. Thanx all.

Yes, he was married to Florence LaRue and they have a child together named Geoffrey. They were married for 12 years I believe. I understand that Mr. Gordon had been ill for quite some time. He did some amazing work with the 5th Dimension. May he rest in peace.

I agree RTA, Marc Gordon was a visionary, He also managed (for a time) Tony Orlando & Dawn and I think the Hues Corporation.

May he rest in peace.

When I saw this name I knew exactly who he was, this is a tragic lost to the memory of the Fifth Dimension and the industry. RIP Marc,

He had an amazing set of ears and a great business acumen...they don't make guys like this anymore, and there sure as hell isn't anyone like him left in the music world. RIP, Marc, and thank you... :-(

Most of the early records on the V.I.P. label were produced by Marc Gordon in collaboration with Hal Davis.

In the early stages Marc and Hal Davis were in charge of Motown's Sunset & Vine office in Los Angeles. That is where i first met Hal.

Marc also worked for Johnny Rivers' music publishing company as well as Soul City Records (he co-produced Al Wilson's "The Snake"). In the early 1970s, he founded Carousel Records which later became the Rocky Road label (both were distributed by Bell Records). Climax's "Precious & Few" as well as "Show & Tell" by Al Wilson were the label's biggest hit records.

Rest well, Mr. Gordon...and thank you for the music.

Here's a little more information on Marc Gordon.

FIFTH DIMENSION MANAGER AND PRODUCER MARC GORDON DIES. Sadly, Marc Gordon who was the Fifth Dimension singing group's manager during the 60's and 70's has passed away after a lengthy illness. He was married to 5th Dimension singer Florence LaRue in 1969 and they have a son Geoffrey. They later divorced. Florence was able to speak with Marc during his illness. Marc once had his own record label Rocky Road and produced some big hit records including Al Wilson's "Show & Tell" and Climax's "Precious & Few." He was a great asset to The 5th Dimension. He will be missed.

He was also involved with Modern/Kent Records in LA and produced (and co-wrote) some great sides for Mary Love, of course, including You Turned My Bitter Into Sweet, I'm In Your Hands and Let Me Know (they could easily have been recorded at Hitsville when no one was looking they had such a Motown sound!).

Hi!

Marc started out in Los Angeles managing Hal davis, who had had numerous single releases on many labels from the late 50s till the early 60s.

He and Hal Davis sing background on Alley-Oop.
He also worked with Glen Campbell and Gary Paxton.

In the 60s he first worked with the Champs (on Challenge in 1960), before he launched his solo career first on Crest (in '61) and then on Capitol in 1962.

After that came his work in Motown's West Coast office, the Versatiles (-> the 5th Dimension) and Johnny Rivers.

Marc worked with Al Wilson on Johnny Rivers' Soul City label (Do What You Gotta Do, the Snake etc.), on Bell in '70 (Mississippi Woman etc.), on his own Carousel label (in '70 and '71) which was renamed Rocky Road in '72 (the cover of Show And Tell, Touch And Go, the cover of La La Peace Song etc.), on Playboy (I've Got A Feeling etc.) and on Roadshow (Count The Days etc.).

Besides Al Wilson, Marc was managing those days the 5th Dimension, Dawn, Thelma Houston and Willie Hutch; later still the Staple Singers, Barbara McNair and Ursula Andress.

Al Wilson: "He had all those people, and he was screwing up, so consequently he was kind of blackballed from the industry for about twenty years. Back in the late 70s in music business there was counterfeiting, tax-sheltering and all that stuff going on, and he was in the middle of it."
(Soul Express: Al Wilson story).

Best regards
Heikki

Nobody ever seems to know what studio or studios Hal Davis and Marc Gordon used to produce the early L.A. Motown sessions. They produced stuff on Stevie, Brenda Holloway and other Motown artists in the '60s at unnamed L.A. studios.

Hi there, I want to make a correction. "Precious & Few" (by Climax) was produced and engineered by Larry Cox in 1972, not Marc Gordon.

Mike, around that time Hal Davis and Marc Gordon were involved with other LA musicians such as Ed Cobb, who of course wrote Every Little Bit Hurts and the follow-up, I'll Always Love You. Former member of the Four Preps group, he and Lincoln Mayorga were behind Gloria Jones records like Tainted Love and the immortal Heartbeat, as well as Ketty Lester's sublime Love Letters and I'm A Fool to Love You, not to mention the Piltdown Men
(groovy baby!).
As for studios, my guess they must have used Gold Star which was hot with Spector stuff in 64.
Someone must know for sure,though!!
