PBS is airing specials that feature the music of both women.

The objective is to find out who you think has had the bigger impact on American music. Both women have things in common even though they came along in different decades. Both are very successful in a field often dominated by men.

So analyze such things as their accomplishments, their styles and the impact each has had on our musical culture.

My vote goes to Carole King. She came along at a time when rock 'n' roll was new or in its infancy. She wrote (and Gerry Goffin) songs for all kinds of different artists that are still being played somewhere today.

Diane Warren may be a succesful songwriter - but that's it.

Apart from the countless hits Carole King wrote
or co-wrote she can arguably claim to have kicked
off the whole singer songwriter genre - and don't let it be forgotten that "Tapestry" was
no 1. on the US album charts for 15 weeks and had
a chart life of nearly six years.

Diane Warren's accomplishments, talented though she may be, pale in comparison. Here's a list of
her songs - I recognize about half a dozen of them, show me a list of Carole's and I'd recognize dozens.

If you are a child of the 60's, I would say Carole King.

Diane Warren has her share of hits, and maybe has one or two hits that bigger than Carole's biggest (given how much bigger hits got as time went along) but Carole has been both songwriter and singer/performer from the 1960's. I really don't think there is alot of question here.

Still I hate when they say APPLE OR ORANGES in any situation.......

The intent was not really apples or oranges. Both are very successful, but from the responses so far overwhelmingly favoring Carole King maybe it's more like David Vs. Goliath.

I brought both up because both were subjects of recent PBS pledge specials and Diane Warren or someone close to her apparently thinks she's in the same league as King or songwriter/producer David Foster, who had an entire PBS special saluting his work.

OK, here's a chance to compare --

Some hit tunes written by Diane Warren (alphabetical by recording artist):

The One I Gave My Heart To - Aaliyah
Don't Turn Around - Ace of Base
I Don't Want to Miss a Thing - Aerosmith
I Turn To You - Christina Aguilera
When I See You Smile - Bad English
Wild is the Wind - Bon Jovi
Solitaire - Laura Branigan
Un-break My Heart - Toni Braxton
I Get Weak - Belinda Carlisle
Note to God - Charice
If I Could Turn Back Time - Cher
I Wanna Touch U There - Sarah Connor
Rhythm of the Night - DeBarge
Because You Loved Me - Celine Dion
There You'll Be - Faith Hill
I'd Lie for You (And That's the Truth) - Meatloaf
Blame It On the Rain - Milli Vanilli
For You I Will - Monica
Music of My Heart - NSYNC/Gloria Estefan
Can't Fight the Moonlight - LeAnn Rimes
How Do I Live - LeAnn Rimes/Trisha Yearwood
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship
Too Lost in You - Sugababes

Now, here's some hit tunes written by Carole King, many with former husband Gerry Goffin, and not counting those she recorded herself (again, alphabetical by recording artist):

Don't Bring Me Down - The Animals
Hi-De-Ho - Blood, Sweat & Tears
Oh No Not My Baby - Maxine Brown
Goin' Back - The Byrds/Dusty Springfield
Wasn't Born to Follow - The Byrds
It's Gonna Take Some Time - The Carpenters
One Fine Day - The Chiffons
Chains - The Cookies/The Beatles
Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby - The Cookies
I Can't Stay Mad at You - Skeeter Davis
Some Kind of Wonderful - The Drifters
Up on the Roof - The Drifters
Crying in the Rain - The Everly Brothers
(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman - Aretha Franklin
So Much Love - Ben E. King
The Loco-Motion - Little Eva/Grand Funk Railroad
Point of No Return - Gene McDaniels
Pleasant Valley Sunday - The Monkees
Every Breath I Take - Gene Pitney
I Can't Make It Alone - P.J. Proby
Hey Girl - Freddie Scott
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow - The Shirelles
Where You Lead - Barbra Streisand
You've Got a Friend - James Taylor/Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway
Take Good Care of My Baby - Bobby Vee

Now include some gems written and recorded by Ms. King herself:

It's Too Late
I Feel the Earth Move
So Far Away
Smackwater Jack
Sweet Seasons
Been to Canaan
Believe in Humanity
Corazon
Jazzman
Nightingale
Only Love is Real
One to one

Feel free to draw your own conclusions, but I think Carole King dominates -- to me, it's not even close.

Just my opinion, of course.

Another big difference is that Diane Warren songs
seem to be hits once - and a lot of that could be down to who sang them and the contemporary production. I doubt anybody who wasn't aware of those songs at the time they were hits will find it easy to recall them. Do any of her songs get revived and become hits again on the strength of the song itself ?

Carole's songs on the other hand have a cross-generation appeal. Look at "The Locomotion" - it's been a huge hit in three different decades by wildly different artists - I mean what else do
Little Eva, Grand Funk and Kylie Minogue have in common.

"The objective is to find out who you think has had the bigger impact on American music." -
there's just no doubt about the answer.
I'm afraid Diane Warren is going to be severely embarassed by this program. I hope this was somebody else's idea - if not she's got a massive case of hubris.

Diane Warren is ok and I applaud her talent but Carole King has spanned many decades as a songwriter and entertainer like Neil Sedaka (same Brill Building people). I feel that there is no comparison.

While some of Carole King's early stuff is very teeny bopper, she did come into her own as a songwriter and later a performer.

By and large, Diane Warren has pretty much written schlock, popular schlock, but schlock nevertheless. She loves to overuse words like rain, ,wind, stars, river, and heaven in her lyrics.

Another apples and oranges comparison. They're both great songwriters, but Carole has been around a lot longer and obviously has a track record that Diane does not yet have.

Carole King. The only Diane Warren songs I really like were Al Green's "Your Heart's In Good Hands" and Patti LaBelle, "If You Asked Me To."

I didn't realize that Diane Warren wrote "Unbreak My Heart" by Toni Braxton and a slew of other songs that span across many genres but I too am a child of the 60's. My vote would have to go to Carole King.

Although in the past 25 years Diane Warren has had more of a track record than Carole King. Although the hits have dried up for Warren in recent years. Maybe Kara DioGuardi has taken up where Warren left off as the hired gun songwriter for pop artists who need material?

Has anyone seen the Carole King / James Taylor "Troubador Reunion" show?
At 68, grandmother Carole King is a magnificent entertainer, dancing on high heels, singing with soul, and connecting with multiple generations. Her songs are completely memorable, and memorized by the audience. Zeitgeist. Even Kara DioGuardi commented to a contestant on "Idol" that Carole is an "in your face" singer/entertainer. See her while you have a chance since she doesn't tour often. The superstar clearly is Carole.

Carole's songs have made a bigger impact. There were some songs that I didn't realize that Diane Warren had written but many of Carole's compositions have gone down in history

This is pretty much the wrong crowd to poll if one was expected a heavy Diane Warren vote, lol. My fear is that the public would probably go for Diane Warren over Carole King because Diane is "newer" than Carole.

It's nice to see SD sticking with Carole in such a uniform manner.

Isn't this a 1st for 100% agreement?

I still love to go on Youtube and play Carole's version of It Might As Well Rain Until September.

Although Diane Warren has become the most prolific songwriter in the past 25 years (with most of her songs being produced for major artists by the "hitman' himself, David Foster-and let's not even go there on who's the most successful producer ever in all genres of music-QUNICY JONES-by countless country miles and then some!), Carole King has been far and wide, more successful and has won multiple Grammy and songwriting awards than we can even count!

Her songs by herself and others she has written and co-written for has garnered more radio airplays in the span of 50 years, and has had more Top-40, Top-10 and more #1 hits than Diane has had so far on the Billboard charts. But not to take anything away from Diane, yes it seems like everytime we turn on the radio, her songs seem to be EVERYWHERE multiple times a day, a very talented and dependable hitmaker in today's music industry, but she has a looooooooooong way to go before she even comes close to Carole's success. Love ya Diane, but this one goes to Carole!

p.s.: Is Carole's uber classic "Tapestry" album one of the most succesful albums of all time? I think it stayed on the Billboard charts for like 15 years or so? what's the deal?
