Always loved that photo session - Hyde Park, London Autumn 1974. The pictures were used for the International/Take Good Care of Yourself/With Love Albums, depending where in the World you were! The Girls looked stunningly beautiful, the Albums were true Philadelphia gems.

Night Life > Three to thrill

LOVED Dreamgirls? Well, the beloved musical inspired by the rise of iconic Motown group The Supremes will probably come to mind when you first feast your eyes and ears on The Three Degrees.

For the benefit of the very young and those who’ve been living in complete isolation and sensory deprivation over the past few decades, The Three Degrees is the legendary American soul and disco trio which cranked out hit after hit between 1960s and 1980s.

The Three Degrees is ‘supremely’ talented in its own right, and that is something you’ll discover for yourself when it shakes things up at Holiday Villa Hotel & Suites Subang’s New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner and Dance (Dec 31, 8pm).

What a way to ring in the new year! Comprising Valerie Holiday, Helen Scott and Cynthia Garrison, The Three Degrees is greatly endowed with unique vocal prowess, masterful choreography and dazzling beauty — qualities which have endeared it to many a music lover over the past decades.

At the Malaysian showcase, guests can expect the trio to perform evergreens like Woman in Love, Giving Up, Giving In, Take Good Care of Yourself and You’re The One, among others.

The group’s signature song, however, is When Will I See You Again?, which earned it accolades, top spots on the US, UK and Japan album charts, and countless gold records.

1, 2, 3... The Three Degrees began more than three decades ago, when its thenmanager, the enigmatic Richard Barrett, brought three teenagers together in Philadelphia. After two years of constant rehearsing and local record hops, the group’s breakthrough in the music scene came by way of Phillybased Swan Records. But they were tough days for the teenagers.

“I remember taking the bus to rehearsals every day,” Scott said. “We’d rehearse until 8 or 9pm and on weekends, too.

And we’d play local record hops whenever we could. Gradually, we started to make noise outside of Philadelphia and proceeded to perform in Pittsburgh, Ohio and Rhode Island on weekends, but that was just because all of us were still schooling.” During the Swan years, the group’s line-up comprised Helen, Fayette Pinkney and Janet Harmon. Their biggest success was probably Gee Baby, featuring Pinkney on lead vocals.

“Those original recordings were quite different from the way we record now,” said Scott.

“We would record with a ‘live’ band in a room at the same time. Only towards the tail-end years with Swan we’d recorded our vocals after the band had fi nished recording the tracks. I also remember when Kenny Gamble would come by the studio to tout his songs.

“You know, we were just happygo- lucky teenagers... we had no big expectations and did our thing for the sheer pleasure of music. We just wanted to sing! I remember getting my fi rst TV paycheck... it was for US$90 (RM315) and I thought I’d hit the jackpot. To a 15-year-old, it was a lot of money.”

Not long after, Scott got married and left the group. By this time, The Three Degrees had signed with New York-based Roulette Records and the line-up included Fayette, Valerie Holiday and Sheila Ferguson.

They would remain intact during their glory years with Roulette and Philadelphia International.

The Three Degree’s hits began with a remake of the Chantels’ 1958 hit Maybe, which was followed by I Do Take You, You’re The One, There’s So Much Love All Around Me (all produced by Barrett).

Trade Winds was the hit that marked the end of their ‘glory years’.

During that two-year period, the trio also made a cameo appearance in the classic movie The French Connection, singing Everybody Gets to Go to the Moon, portraying themselves in a cabaret scene.

In 1972, The Three Degrees aligned itself with the Philadelphia International label and hit pay-dirt the same year with Dirty Ol Man, before two other hits, TSOP and When Will I See You Again were released the following year.

“The whole Philadelphia sound was the brainchild of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff,” Holiday said.

They wrote and produced most of the hits for various acts during that period... Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, the O’Jays, Billy Paul, the Intruders. Honestly, when we were first signed to the label, we weren’t aware of its potential, but at our first session with Philadelphia International, we felt the magic.

It was different from anything we had ever experienced before.

“To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t heard When Will I See You Again! We had released Dirty Ol Man as the fi rst single, and, to me, When Will I See You Again was just another track on the album. I really wasn’t knowledgeable enough to be a good judge,” she said.

“I was very disappointed when we left the label. I thought that Kenny and Leon were the best writers and producers we had ever worked with. I liked their work and I liked working with them.

To this day, Barrett has never explained why we left!” And the band played on...

During its three-year stint with Philadelphia International, The Three Degrees enjoyed a good measure of success with hits like Year of Decision, Take Good Care of Yourself and Love is the Message.

It was also during this time that the threesome made its biggest stride forward. So much so, that they garnered a huge fan base - which comprised a few household names.

A great deal of attention has been given to the fact that Britain’s Prince Charles publicly announced The Three Degrees as his favourite group (“Charlie’s Angels” was how the Prince of Wales had tagged them).

“It was a great feeling... a feeling of awe,” said Holiday of the royal recognition. “Going to Buckingham Palace was... I’m lost for words! The British royal family was an institution and it really didn’t sink in at the time the magnitude of the people we were meeting. The British people had also taken to us very quickly and very warmly and that warmth has always remained.

“It was actually the Press who tagged us ‘Charlie’s Angels’,” Scott said.

“I don’t know if Prince Charles himself ever said that. But we did many charity events for several members of the Royal family and we met Princess Diana, of course. In fact, on one occasion, just after she had given birth to Prince Harry and I was pregnant with my daughter, Karis, she whispered to me that she thought she was pregnant, too!”

In fact, The Three Degrees divas were invited guests at Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding reception. “The only other American guests were Nancy Reagan and (actress) Susan George,” said Scott.

Scott had rejoined the group in 1976, replacing Pinkney, and together, they moved on to Epic Records. Another album was soon released, but the group failed to secure any major success through it.

But, a year later, they teamed up with Giorgio Moroder (who catapulted Donna Summer to fame) and a new string of hits was unleashed, including Giving Up, Giving In, My Simple Heart and the lush ballad, Woman in Love.

In 1986, Ferguson left the group and her replacement was Garrison. Thereafter, The Three Degrees has been regularly touring the world, occasionally recording, but always working.

And it’s hard work in the early years has held it in good stead for today’s more demanding audience.

“For us, it is still exciting (doing music) and we still enjoy our work,” said Holiday. “We are blessed with a wide age group appeal, from 15 to 65.

This is why we have survived, I think. We learned and were taught how to entertain people and even before we had hit records, we knew how to do our job, in the choreography, costumes, lighting aspect... these were things we’d learned at an early age.

“I think we have done many firsts in our career,” Scott said.

“We have opened many doors for other entertainers. We may not have always succeeded, but we have never given up. It still amazes me when we see teenagers singing along to our songs, while we still have fans who have grown with us.”

Interestingly, The Three Degrees has lasted so long, it even made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest-running female vocal group in history! Now that’s an act you definitely won’t want to miss.
