December, 16 2006. Three Degrees in Holland 16 december 2006 Finally Pasadena had the opportunity to book the famous Three Degrees in Holland. A spectacular gala night was organised for the annual Rembrandt Gala in the Pieterskerk in Leiden. This hurch is famous for the fact that the Pilgrim Fathers assembled there to sail to the USA and has been visited by George Bush when in Holland. Trudy Kwik of Kwik Events asked Pasadena Productions to organise the musical entertainment for this night. The ladies were as energetic as ever and entertained the public that reacted jubulant after the performance. On the picture we see them with Jan Kiewiet de Jonge.

I am quite sure it is the same rerecording of their hits that Helen, Valerie, and Cynthia did in 1998 that is out under so many different names. It is a nice picture but so many small labels are putting out this CD hoping to make a buck. |

Helen's solo sung available @ www.3degreesfootage.be; I've had reactions that some videos didn't play very good. So I remade everything and I'm busy to covert all the videos. Now, I use the same format that YouTube uses. It should be loading better. |

Out of The Past Into The Future was a good album for Helen, Valerie, and Cynthia. The 3 of them sound great and so was the production. Helen's vocals showed her sweetness and Cynthia showed her bluesy flavor. Valerie showed her power. |

TheSupremes - if you check back over the postings, you'll see that it was stated that Valerie needed some help; nothing was said about her having a problem. Most of us here have been involved with Valerie and the rest of the Girls for more years than I care to remember and we are all more than happy to help them out as and when we can. Your attitude of " let her pick her own songs - jeez" is not welcome here and is certainly not condoned or appreciated by any of us. We do welcome you here but perhaps, if you have any more comments such as the one I have mentioned, kindly keep them to yourself. They certainly are NOT welcome here. J. |

Indeed, this is a public forum. What it is not, if I may be so bold to say, is a platform for unnecessary and crass comments which bear no relevance to any form of subject or discussion being conducted here. Has any one got A Soulful Tale Of Two Cities that can tell me which tracks (other than Aint That Peculiar) the girls vocals are on, as I know they do BV's on some. Also you can now download A Soulful Tale Of Two Cities from I-Tunes, in the UK it cost £7:99 for all 30 tracks, or if you only want some of them they are 79p each, you can also preview the tracks before you buy (Freda Payne murdering When Will I See You Again) :-O |

Motown Fan - that's exactly how their harmonies sounded - spot on and pitch perfect! They worked extremely hard to find the exact three notes. Not only are their individual voices amazing, but when they combined into real harmony singing, the notes just pierced the air...truly awesome stuff!!! J x |

Mel - "Contact" was recorded around 1968/9 when the Girls were contracted to Warner Brothers, after a brief stay at Neptune Records with Messrs Gamble and Huff. To my knowledge, the "B" side, "No, No, Not Again" and another track, "If That Guy Walks Out Of My Life" were the only three cuts on that label. They soon moved onto Roulette Records where, together with appearances in Las Vegas opening for the likes of Englebert Humperdinck, they really started to make their mark. Jeremy x |

Here's the text too... In July 1974, The Three Degrees shot to the UK number one with 'When Will I see You Again,' a classic still played some three decades later! The Three Degrees are the longest running female vocal group in history. For over 30 years they've toured the world, and there's still no stopping them. Taking a morning out from their current tour 'The Best Disco In Town', they're in to treat us to a touch of nostalgia... The Three Degrees 'The Three Degrees' famously known for their song 'When Will I See You Again'...always perfectly co-ordinated in their dance routines and their vocal harmonies! Although always fronted by a 3 person line up, a total of 11 women have rotationally been members of the group so far! Today The Three Degrees are formed by Helen Scott Leggins, Valerie Christie and Cynthia Garrison. Helen joined just a few months after the band first launched (and two of the group left) in 1963, Valerie later joined in 1967 and Cynthia in 1989. The Best Disco In Town The Best Disco In Town is back, and guaranteed to make you want to dust off your boots and get ready for a boogie! Car Wash, Wishing on a Star and Love Don't Live Here Anymore are just a small selection of the classic hits guaranteed to get the audience in the disco mood... Performing their greatest 70's hits are of course The Three Degrees, Rose Royce, Tavares, , Odyssey, The Real Thing and George McCrae. The tour kicks off tomorrow in Bournemouth (9th May), finishing in London at the Hammersmith Apollo on the 26th. Valerie says: “Touring's still exciting, we're blessed with a wide age group appeal... from 15 to 65! This is why we have survived. It still amazes me when we see teenagers singing along with our songs, and yet we still have the fans who have grown with us!” |

Thursday May 10th 2007, Brentwood Leisure Centre, Essex - The Best Disco In Town 2007. It may be nearly 33 years since I first saw The Three Degrees live on stage; it may be that some faces may be different; but it is with such pride that I say that the Ladies stole the Show last night - and that's not just my opinion...that comes from every person there that I spoke to and it was on the faces of everyone else in the Audience. From the opening bars of "Shake Your Groove Thing", through all their hits, to the closing cords of "When Will I See You Again", the Ladies shimmered and swayed with all their usual grace and charm and made the night their own. The on-stage banter with, not only myself, but other old friends in the audience such as Paul, Judy and others made this a very special affair and it was so heartwarming to know how happy these Girls are to be back in the UK. Spending time with them afterwards just added to the joy of the entire evening. Believe me, this was one night with The Three Degrees I will never forget - much thanks and love to Valerie, Cynthia and Helen - don't leave it so long next time. Jeremy xxxx |

REVIEW:
FAVOURITES: The Three Degrees had the whole audience dancing and singing. Catching the disco fever all over again DARREN SCOTT The Best Disco In Town - Live 2007 *** Edinburgh Playhouse THESE days you can hardly turn around for bumping into old pop groups reforming for "one-off" shows that soon evolve into tours and new albums. But now, following the success of revival Here and Now tours, the (often forgotten) stars of yesteryear are branching out and taking over theatres as well. Which, considering the nostalgia fuelled success of shows such as Mamma Mia, Footloose and Fame is probably not a bad move to make. Except of course when you're calling the show The Best Disco In Town, in case it fails to live up to its name. As beautiful a venue as the Playhouse is, its days of allowing the seats to be pulled aside for everyone to let loose and dance are gone. That, however, isn't stopping anyone tonight. With the calibre of disco legends on offer with this particular show, the latest in a long line of 'Best Disco' tours, people are literally dancing wherever they can. There aren't many flares on show, but there is the odd afro wig and the obligatory cowboy hat dotted about. Odyssey open the night with the classic Native New Yorker and the audience are immediately on their feet, singing along right through their set, ending with Going Back To My Roots. George McCrae follows with his 1974 hit Rock Your Baby, which became one of the first of the disco era. His high range vocal ability gets both cheers and applause from the crowd. A favourite of Prince Charles, The Three Degrees prove they're still quite spry with a number of nifty dance routines. A three-piece since 1963, a total of eleven ladies have been members of the group. But it's hits and not faces that the audience have come for and the Degrees provide them in abundance, culminating in their biggest number When Will I See You Again. They have the whole audience singing along and joining in with their dance routine. The Real Thing - based around the Amoo brothers Eddie and Chris - are the group here that have most recently enjoyed chart success, with a remix of So Much Love To Give in 2005. Other crowd pleasers include Can You Feel The Force and You To Me Are Everything. However, Tavares outdoes The Real Thing on the family front - all three remaining members are brothers. Most remembered for More Than A Woman, they also sang It Only Takes A Minute, the song that later catapulted Take That to stardom (the first time round) and Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel. Despite a slightly disappointing performance in comparison to the earlier acts, the crowd are still shouting for more from Tavares when the curtain comes down. Things get a bit too slow by the time Rose Royce close the evening with a line-up of songs that everyone instantly recognises - Wishing on a Star, Love Don't Live Here Anymore and Is It Love You're After? However, the slowing of tempo leaves some people slightly frustrated in the build up to closing number - and arguably the biggest hit all evening - Car Wash, to the point where many leave before they get the chance to hear it. ANOTHER REVIEW The best disco in town DAVID POLLOCK THE BEST DISCO IN TOWN *** PLAYHOUSE, EDINBURGH ONCE I'd managed to get over the mildly ludicrous sight of 50-year-old men dancing like they were in Backstreet Boys, I realised that this all-star nostalgia revue of one-time disco superstars could teach the pop stars of today a thing or two. Lesson one: nobody wants to hear the album tracks - just get up there, play five or six big hits that everyone knows, and clear out, perhaps even leaving them wanting more. The show was a curio for any even slightly progressive music fan - a chance to have any "where are they now?" questions answered in respect of such heroes of a long-faded zeitgeist as Odyssey (Native New Yorker) and George McRae (Rock Your Baby). The fans here greeted The Three Degrees' latest incarnation with the same joyous fervour a Beatles revival might enjoy. We also saw elderly Scousers The Real Thing doing their boyband bit to Can You Feel the Force? and the candy-coated You To Me Are Everything, while Tavares flexed their not-inconsiderable back-catalogue, which features the Take That-appropriated It Only Takes a Minute and sweetly lurid Saturday Night Fever-soundtracker, More Than a Woman. Rose Royce delivered both the night's best song with the mighty Is It Love You're After? and its most featherweight nadir of cheese in Car Wash. A good time was had by all, despite the fact disco is only really acceptable late on a Saturday night. This article: http://living.scotsman.com/mus ic.cfm?id=796382007 |

AND ANOTHER... Best Disco..@ Apollo Sally Cook 24/ 5/2007 Rolling into town on a tide of sequins and big hair, the Best Disco In Town arrived at the Apollo to show Manchester that disco is far from dead. With an extensive line-up featuring Odyssey, George McCrae, The Three Degrees, The Real Thing, Tavares and Rose Royce, the tour brings together seventies luminaries in a whistle-stop tour of some of the era’s classic tracks. A warmly-received Odyssey and George McCrae pave the way for the three undoubted highlights of the evening, as The Three Degrees shimmy on stage in matching red sequins. With meticulously executed choreography, Dance Little Sister and When Will I See You Again show that thirty years is nothing when you’ve still got soul, and the impeccable vocals and impressive stage presence prove that the three Philadelphia divas are still going strong. The Real Thing follow, out to prove that Britain can stand its ground in the disco hall of fame, bringing their Merseybeat-influenced pop and entertaining dance routines to the stage. Very keen on a cappella, they harmonise their way through their biggest hit You To Me Are Everything with a little help from an enthusiastic crowd, which warms them up nicely for next act, Tavares. Resplendent Resplendent in red, white and blue, Tavares bring the house down with It Only Takes A Minute, Killing Me Softly, More Than A Woman and Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel. There is a distinct impression that this is what the crowd came to see; sitting in the circle, the whole balcony is – rather worryingly – bouncing beneath our feet as the assembled throng let their hair down to Tavares’ soul-inflected, funky beats. Unexpectedly, headline act Rose Royce are met with a somewhat lukewarm reception, as the audience – perhaps exhausted by their earlier endeavours – return to their seats. With yet more sequins and the addition of a brass section, they give an assured performance of Wishing On A Star and Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, though the crowd is notably reticent in contrast to their earlier enthusiasm. What follows is a confusingly extended introduction to the band, with dedications to the earlier acts, a tribute to the (unmoved) audience and some shameless plugging of the Rose Royce website. Carwash – obviously - provides the finale, and although it gets people back on their feet, there is undoubtedly less of the previous buoyant energy. It is a surprise conclusion to a surprisingly entertaining evening. What did you think of the gig? Have your say below. |

THE END FOR ME... Today, I received a message that my account @ YouTube has been permanently disabled, due to The Three Degrees clips violation rights. So that's it for me, guyz & girlz. It was my pleasure to do it, as you all know: a lot of work and thousands of viewers are gone. So, the music-industry or what_ever or who_ever did this made it clear. No FUN just PAY: the only thing they understand. |

Gino I understood on the 3D forum it only concerned the Dutch TopPop clip of 'giving up'. Tonight its being aired again on Dutch tv in a compelation programm of that show. Wonder who is so frantic having fun with it and defending every buck he can make out of it. After what happened to you the fun obviously is not ours, and I assume the bucks won't go to the ladies. Just keep on posting on YouTube. It is very much apreciated! Harry |

Is the group's 1st (?) UK Epic label 45 release after they left Philly International known to listies (I don't think it gained a US relase as they were still having tracks such as "Free Ride" issued on Philly Int in 76). This 45 was released in the UK in April 76 and entered the UK pop charts on 1st May (peaking at a lowly position: 3 36 I think). The cuts were produced by Richie Barratt (in the US or UK ?) and titled "Toast of Love" and "Do It (Use Your Mind)" -- both songs being co-written by Shiela Ferguson). The A side, "Toast of Love" is a sing-along slowish number that hasn't stood the test of time too well BUT ""Do It" is a funky dance track that comes across (in parts) much like their cuts with MFSB (lots of full instrumentation with only occassional repeated vocal lines). |

The first Epic release was indeed "Toast of Love/Do It", released in April 1976 in UK and Europe. It was released in the Far East a little later to coincide with the Tour of that area which started in the Summer. It never received the promotion it so rightly deserved and therefore did only get to #36 in the UK Chart, although it was part of the Playlist for the'76 tour and was performed on TV too, to much acclaim. There is an excellent rendition of this song on Youtube, which I loaded there myself; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =ZyS_eNFGiBc If you need any more information, just ask! J x |

JSmith - just to add to my earlier posting, the tracks in question were actually recorded and produced in Japan and were included in the Album, "A Toast of Love" which was only released by CBS/SONY in the Far East, although it has made it's way further West over the years and has pride of place in every Three Degrees' friend/fan's collection! Whats the story behind the Three Degrees track included on the Loma Records 2fer CD released by Warner Archives in 1995. The cut is titled "If That Guy Walks Out of My Life", was written by Fred Haber, arranged by Sammy Lowe and produced (of course) by Richie Barrett. Its a somewhat poppy uptempo item with an early 60's 'girl-group' feel to it. The girls were of course signed to a deal with Warner Bros in 1968 but at the time the Loma label was being shut down, so perhaps they were initially meant to go onto the Loma label. Did they just have the one 45 release on Warners ("Contact") and is it known if there are any other unissued cuts by them that still havn't escaped from the W B vaults ?? |

All I really know is that it was a very short-lived relationship with Warner Bros/Loma, around 1968 if my information serves me correctly. "Contact/No, Not Again" was the only release at the time, which has gone on to be a Northern Soul Classic. Other than that the info. is very sketchy and the Girls soon moved onto Metromedia and then Roulette, where the hits, Stateside at least, began rolling out. J x |

It was all to do with Richard Barrett, the girls were fed up with the way things were going and had had enough so decided to "sack" Richard, of course he was not happy threatened to replace all three of them which the record company would not stand for, law suits were flying back and forth, the girls fan club and Val Masson along with the record company were involved (somewhere in Ariola/BMG vaults there are some tracks started for a new LP the follow up to 3D) some of the girls earnings from UK gigs were froze by the courts, they could not use the name Three Degrees it got very messy, but thankfully that is all in the past and they are still here and can even now gig in the States under the name, and it just goes to show what troupers they are as it would have destroyed anyone else, and the love and support they got from us gave them the strength to carry on. |

As far as I know, the only track that was recorded as a follow-up to 3D was "Dear God", which was later redone for the "Album of Love" collection, although "A Sonnet to Love" was also on the cards. More than 25 years later, the Girls are still going strong and are still a joy to see and hear!!! J x |

please do not disrespect my husband the late Richard Barrett. If it were not for him there would be no Three Degrees. There are only a select few that know the story of Richard Barrett and The Three Degrees and obviously you are not one of them. And for your information The Three Degrees are working here in the USA because of me. And it's time for people to let go of the past as this is a new begining. Richard had accomplished a lot in his life The Three Degrees were just one of them. |

Hi can someone calrify if one-time 80s member of The Three Degrees Vera Brown is the same person who was in a latter incarnation of The Ritchie Family? Does anyone have any pics of Vera with Helen and Valerie? Also I was watching some clips on youtube of The Three Degrees which I hadnt seen in a while and one clip was a perofrmance on a television show which featured Sheila and Valerie with Miquel Brown. Where was Helen? Many thanks! |

Helen was actually pregnant at that time and took a few months off. Longtime friend of the Group Miquel helped out with some dates in Europe to promote "This Is The House", the second single on Supreme Records. As far as Vera is concerned, I do have a pic of her with Val and Helen which I will scan and put on here but I really don't know if she joined the Richie Family. She was only with the Three Degrees for a very short time but has the distinction of being the first replacement for Sheila Ferguson. After a year or so of regrouping, Valerie and Helen were joined by Cynthia Garrison and that is the line-up which remains to this day. J x |

There was a Vera Brown in Philly based group Neo-Experience in 1975/76 -- other members of the group included David Simmons & Venson Unto (ex of the Millionaires & Executive Suite). The group had at least 2 x 45 releases on Sahara, one in 1975, one in 76. |

...INFO from discomusic.com..... After Executive Suite.... Vince Unto got a job in construction, but did sing part-time with a Philly group called the Intrigues and later did backup with a singer called David Simmons who then changed his name to Abu Bakar. The group that was with Simmons/Bakar became known as the Neo Experience and one of the female singers according to Vince sounded like Chaka Khan and she went on to front the Ritchie Family. Her name was Vera Brown. |

No, Vera didn't stick around that long! I think she just did a few dates in Ireland but found the schedule too much for her. Rea came along during 1987 and lasted about a year and a half; she went over to Japan and toured with the Girls here in the UK too. She was a nice girl and was replaced by Victoria for the "Philly Tour" of 1989. J xxxx |

I would hope that this obviously talented lady is still on this Planet. It would be a tragedy if she weren't as she wouldn't be old at all. J x |
